Our featured artist for July, with an exhibit titled: "Photo Memories." Featured are photos from local and vacation photos that Julius has taken.
Sometime between the age of 12 and 14, Julius A. Prince, Jr. picked up his father's Kodak Brownie Camera and started to take photos. During those early days, it was hard to learn about photography as it took at least a week to develop the film. One would continue to make the same mistakes without the proper guidance. His photos of people were not very good. In fact, a good photo was more of an accident than skill.
Julius' interest in photography continued through college and a teaching career. Eventually he learned enough to produce three yearbooks, from 1985 through 1987, for the Martin Luther King Middle School. During the summer of 1987, he met Sandy Middlebrooks, a Boston professional photographer who trained him to photograph events and weddings.
With his new skills, Julius started to work in the Duxbury, Marshfield, and Kinston area. His first photo was published in 2004. Julius volunteered his services for the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society, Winslow House in Marshfield, Duxbury Free Library, Duxbury Senior Center, Kingston Public Library, the Art Complex Museum, and the Alden House. Additionally, he was the official photographer for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Family of Schools Network events in New York, Maryland, Los Angeles, New Mexico, Washington D.C., Connecticut, and Rome, Italy.
"Photo Memories," is a collection of photos from the past, of local and vacation photos, taken by Julius. The exhibit came to being because his sister-in-law, Patricia Flaherty, encouraged him to gather photos for a display. Flaherty, has exhibited her own watercolor paintings at the Kingston Public Library twice. Despite his profession, this is Julius' first exhibit.
"It is a pleasure to step away from the various events of the past and show other interests," said Julius. "I hope you enjoy the exhibit."
The exhibit will be on view in the library's gallery throughout July. The library is open Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
